Алгоритм может быть описан блок-схемой. Термин происходит от имени древнеперсидского математика Мухаммеда ибн Муса аль Харезми, написавшего трактат, посвящённый алгоритмическому методу. Алгоритмы могут быть детерминированными (deterministic algorithm) или стохастическими (вероятностными) (stochastic algorithm).
